On MS, setting up fastcgi with PHP for IIS 6 was possible, but it was a huge pain to get all the permissions right, having to allocate security pools, double check location of your dlls and lots of other details. And half of the time you could not get it to work. I have not yet tested the official distro, but I sure hope it's easier to set up!

sure, but when talking about fastCGI that much it should also be mentioned, that php itself does by far not implement what would be possible with fastCGI - that's a fact and it annoys me - especially when i see how important fastCGI is getting for PHP - not only in IIS context, but also together with lighttpd, apache and any other webserver which supports fastCGI.

The wave of hype around IIS and PHP is everywhere. In fact, PHP has never been stable on Windows. Some extensions are extremely slow. If I need FastCGI, I think of Nginx and Lighttpd

I think it has more to do with the fact that PHP finally because usable on IIS with fastcgi - yes the previous incarnations (isapi and regular cgi) were really THAT bad ;) (pick your poison...crash or crawl)
FastCGI is really useful in other contexts as well, keep preaching it, although some of the "it's good" reasons you mention really don't mean much on windows ;)
1. NTFS doesn't have this limitation 2. apache runs perfectly well mpm on windows (doesn't even hit the thread hiccups that isapi does)
Anyway, I think the hype you're seeing is simply the windows users who are often unseen and unheard in the PHP community breathing a collective sigh of relief - no more convincing the boss that PHP is something great ;)
